Sister Juliann Murphy, CCVI (1914 – 1993) was born on January 9, 1914 in Mullingar, County Westmeath, Ireland. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word (CCVI) in 1932, took her first vows in 1935, and made her final profession in 1941. She received her BS in Nursing from Incarnate Word College in 1945 and her MS in Nursing Education from the Catholic University of America in 1946.
Sister Juliann served at hospitals across Texas and Missouri as an Instructor of Nursing Education and Operating Room Supervisor. She spent the latter portion of her career, from 1976 to 1991, at CHRISTUS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paris, Texas. Sister took many courses in watercolor and oil painting at Paris Junior College during this period. She retired to San Antonio, Texas and spent her final years making art and volunteering at the Rebarn Center for Spirituality and the Arts. Sister passed away on February 16, 1993.
In a letter to the CCVI Sisters on February 18, 1993, two days after Sister Juliann’s passing, Sister Alice Holden, CCVI (1935 - ), Director of Rebarn, wrote, “I miss [Sister Juliann’s] calm, helpful, and joyous presence here. She worked at her own art, watercolors, and completed a course from North Light Art School… But of greater impact to me was her presence. She just was here. When people came to see shows in the Gallery, Juliann was always very gracious and inviting. She directed them upstairs and allowed them to browse. Sor Juliann Murphy, CCVI (1914-1993) nació el 9 de enero de 1914 en Mullingar, Condado de Westmeath, Irlanda. Ingresó en la Congregación de las Hermanas de la Caridad del Verbo Encarnado (CCVI) en 1932, emitió sus primeros votos en 1935 e hizo su profesión perpetua en 1941. Obtuvo su licenciatura en Enfermería en el Incarnate Word College en 1945 y su maestría en Educación en Enfermería en la Universidad Católica de América en 1946.
Sor Juliann prestó servicios en hospitales de Texas y Misuri como instructora de educación en enfermería y supervisora de quirófano. Pasó la última parte de su carrera, de 1976 a 1991, en el Hospital CHRISTUS St. Joseph en Paris, Texas. Durante este período, cursó numerosos cursos de acuarela y pintura al óleo en el Paris Junior College. Se jubiló en San Antonio, Texas, y pasó sus últimos años creando arte y trabajando como voluntaria en el Centro Rebarn para la Espiritualidad y las Artes. Falleció el 16 de febrero de 1993.
En una carta a las Hermanas CCVI el 18 de febrero de 1993, dos días después del fallecimiento de la Hermana Juliann, Sor Alice Holden, CCVI (1935-), Directora de Rebarn, escribió: «Extraño la presencia serena, servicial y alegre [de Sor Juliann] aquí. Trabajaba en su propio arte, acuarelas, y completó un curso en la Escuela de Arte North Light… Pero lo que más me impactó fue su presencia. Simplemente estaba aquí. Cuando la gente venía a ver exposiciones en la Galería, Juliann siempre era muy amable y atenta. Los guiaba al piso de arriba y les permitía curiosear. Su sentido del humor ayudaba a la gente a sentirse bienvenida».
