Description

Title [assigned by archives]: Bust of a Man Sister Alice Holden, CCVI (1935 – 2026) sculpted this small bust of a man from earthenware clay. The figure is shown from the chest up without a shirt, gazing straight ahead with his mouth slightly open. The head, neck, and torso of the sculpture are hollow. CCVI Archives received this sculpture following Sister’s passing on February 22, 2026. At that time, the head of the bust was being used as a planter. Sister placed a layer of mesh inside of the sculpture’s head to hold dirt in place while also allowing water to drain through the hollow neck. Wax residue on the surface of the bust suggests that it was used at some point as a candle holder.

Sister Alice Holden, CCVI was born on April 12, 1935 in Chicago, Illinois. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word (CCVI) in San Antonio, Texas in 1953, took her first vows in 1956, and made her final profession in 1961. She spent over a decade as an elementary educator before receiving her MBA from Loyola University in 1974. Sister used her business expertise when serving as the Executive Director of Southwestern Children’s Home (1978-1980) and counselor on the first CCVI U.S. Province Team (1984-1988). After receiving a Doctor of Ministry in 1990 and spending a year teaching T’ai Chi Chih in the St. Louis area, Sister Alice returned to San Antonio to help develop the CCVI Sisters’ new ministry, ReBarn/Center for the Arts and Spirituality. From 1992 to 2005, she served in a variety of roles (Director, Program Coordinator, and Spiritual Director), led poetry readings and T’ai Chi Chih classes, coordinated capital improvement projects, and oversaw the Center’s many programmatic efforts. Sister invited community members from all walks of life to the Center in an effort to bring harmony to the diverse San Antonio community. Upon the Center’s closing in 2005, Sister Alice remarked, “Most significant for me, I think, is the individuals whose lives turned around because they found a deep meaning in their own faith, in themselves, and in God. And they found that through art and through workshops and through spiritual direction.” Sister Alice continued to lead spiritual retreats and T’ai Chi Chih classes after her 12-year tenure at ReBarn. She also founded the SPARKS (Spiritual Practices and the Arts Reclaiming Knowledge of the Soul) and InterfaithINC (UIW Retreat and Conference Center) ministries. Sister Alice passed away on February 22, 2026 in San Antonio, Texas, leaving behind a prolific output of poetry, including her 2005 volume “Sparks of the Divine One.” When asked in 1980 if she would like to contribute any creative works to the CCVI Archives, Sister wrote, “When I pass on- I hope to leave a collection of verses that tell it like it is…”

Notes
