Sister Mary McArdle, CCVI (1911 – 2007) was born in Claremorris, County Mayo, Ireland on December 29, 1911. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word (CCVI) in Dunmore, Ireland in 1932, took her first vows in 1935, and made her final profession in 1940. She served her entire career as an elementary educator and librarian at Congregational schools across Texas. Sister Mary received her B.A. in Elementary Education from Incarnate Word College in 1972.
Sister Mary had no formal artistic training, but took up art during her retirement at the Incarnate Word Retirement Center in San Antonio. She credited the CCVI-run Rebarn Center for Spirituality and the Arts with providing her opportunities to take classes and develop her artistic abilities. She described her artistic process by stating, “Permeating my art is a great love of nature and the spiritual. I see God’s grandeur and creative power ‘flaming out like shining from shook foil.’ Our Creator is The Artist from Whom I glean inspiration for works depicting Christian symbolism. My talent and spare time are gifts for my golden years and for this- I praise God.”
Sister Mary’s painting “Pied Beauty” was selected as a semi-finalist for the Texas Association of Homes for the Aging (TAHA) Art Show in 1992. The work was displayed in the Transco Art Gallery in Houston, Texas from May 1 to June 5, 1992. Sister Mary delivered the opening prayer at the art exhibit’s grand opening.

Sor Mary McArdle, CCVI (1911-2007) nació en Claremorris, Condado de Mayo, Irlanda, el 29 de diciembre de 1911. Ingresó en la Congregación de las Hermanas de la Caridad del Verbo Encarnado (CCVI) en Dunmore, Irlanda, en 1932, emitió sus primeros votos en 1935 e hizo su profesión perpetua en 1940. Trabajó toda su carrera como educadora de primaria y bibliotecaria en escuelas congregacionalistas de todo Texas. Sor Mary se licenció en Educación Primaria en el Incarnate Word College en 1972.
Sor Mary no recibió formación artística formal, pero se dedicó al arte durante su jubilación en el Centro de Jubilación del Verbo Encarnado en San Antonio. Atribuyó al Centro Rebarn para la Espiritualidad y las Artes, administrado por la CCVI, la oportunidad de tomar clases y desarrollar sus habilidades artísticas. Sobre su práctica artística, escribió: “Mi arte se impregna de un gran amor por la naturaleza y lo espiritual. Veo la grandeza y el poder creativo de Dios resplandecer como un papel de aluminio. Nuestro Creador es el Artista de quien obtengo inspiración para obras que representan el simbolismo cristiano. Mi talento y mi tiempo libre son dones para mis años dorados y por esto, alabo a Dios”.
La pintura de Sor Mary, “Pied Beauty”, fue seleccionada como semifinalista para la Exposición de Arte de la Asociación de Hogares para Personas Mayores de Texas (TAHA) en 1992. La obra se exhibió en la Galería de Arte Transco en Houston, Texas, del 1 de mayo al 5 de junio de 1992. La Hermana Mary pronunció la oración inaugural en la gran inauguración de la exposición de arte.
Sor Mary McArdle falleció el 12 de marzo de 2007 en San Antonio, Texas.
