Description

Title [assigned by artist]: Jesus Good Shepherd Sister M. Alphonsine Seiwert, CCVI (1884 – 1959) painted Jesus Good Shepherd in 1959, the final year of her life. This large-scale oil painting depicts Christ kneeling before a mountain range, cradling a lamb and clutching his shepherd’s staff. Two aspects of the painting allude to the Crucifixion: thorny branches protrude in the foreground while the lamb’s front hooves drip blood. Pink block letters announce the subject, “Jesus Good Shepherd” across the bottom middle of the canvas. The signature on this piece deviates from those of Sister Alphonsine’s other works, as she spells her name as “Aphonsine.”
