This small plaster statue was given to Archives upon the passing of Sister Monika Schonberger, CCVI on July 2, 2011. She was the Sacristan of the Adoration Chapel and likely kept the statue among her possessions from 1988, when the Adoration Chapel moved from the St. Joseph's Convent to the Village at Incarnate Word, until her death.
Sister Francisca Eiken, CCVI, former Director of Archives, provided the following information:
The Annunciation Statue received in the Archives on 8/2/2011 was used during the 'Angelus Devotion' at midnight on the Eve of March 25, the Feast of the Annunciation for many years, as early as the 1930s as late as the 1960s. It was placed on the sanctuary steps in front of the Communion Rail in the Chapel of the Incarnate Word. There were candles and flower around it forming a little shrine. At 11:40p.m. a small bell was rung on second, third and fourth floors to awaken the Sisters. They arose from their beds and went to the chapel where they knelt in silence until the clock struck twelve. Then they recited the Angelus once and 'The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us' nine times. This was repeated three times leaving a slight pause before beginning each Angelus. Then they returned to their beds. The 'shrine' was removed immediately afterward and stored until the next year."
The statue is of German origin. The inscription, "Gegrüßet seist du, Maria, du bist voll der Gnaden!," is written along its base. This translates to, "Hail Mary, full of Grace!"

The Adoration Chapel's history began on September 8, 1932. This was the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, and the following note appeared in the Convent Diary: "This Birthday of Our Blessed Lady will long be cherished by all the Sisters, but especially by those at the Motherhouse, for on this day, was inaugurated Perpetual Adoration in this Chapel, for a period of five years. This privilege was granted to Rev. Mother Bonaventure in the private audience she had with Our Holy Father Pius XI on the 23 of July" (SA Provincial House Annals, 1931-1934). The adoration of the Eucharist continued for twenty four hours a day, with at least two Sisters assigned watch at each hour, until the Adoration Chapel moved to St. Joseph's Convent in 1955. The retired Sisters at St. Joseph's observed perpetual adoration until September 12, 1988, when the Adoration Chapel moved to the third floor of newly-constructed Extended Care wing at the Motherhouse.
When the Chapel moved to Extended Care, Sisters no longer observed nighttime adoration. Rather, adoration took place from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. In 2000, these hours were reduced to only four hours per day. In 2007, the Adoration Chapel celebrated its diamond anniversary and, after 75 years, new seats were installed. As of 2025, the Chapel remains open for perpetual Adoration on the third floor of the Village at Incarnate Word.Research Type
