Sister Catalina Fresquez, CCVI was born on February 11, 1937 in Socorro, Texas. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word (CCVI) in 1957, took first vows in 1960, and made her final profession in 1965. Sister Catalina received her BA in Mathematics from Incarnate Word College in 1961 and began her career teaching high school math and science.
Sister received her MA and PhD in Zoology from the University of Texas (MA 1969; PhD 1976). She specialized in genetic research and served as a Professor of Biology at Brown University, Incarnate Word College, Northwestern University, Barry University, and Loyola Marymount University. Sister Catalina spent the latter portion of her career in parish ministry before returning to San Antonio to serve as the CCVI Sisters’ Treasurer from 2008-2012.
There is little documentation on Sister Catalina’s artistic works. Her paintings primarily date after 1998, the year in which Sister took a sabbatical in Washington, D.C. Though first a scientist, Sister Catalina was a prolific artist later in life. As of 2025, the CCVI Archives own approximately twenty of her paintings and several sketches; however, there are 19 documented paintings not in archival possession.
Sister Catalina passed away on August 1, 2019 in San Antonio, Texas, leaving behind a legacy of both scientific and creative contributions.Research Type

Sor Catalina Fresquez, CCVI, nació el 11 de febrero de 1937 en Socorro, Texas. Ingresó en la Congregación de las Hermanas de la Caridad del Verbo Encarnado (CCVI) en 1957, emitió sus primeros votos en 1960 y realizó su profesión perpetua en 1965. Recibió su licenciatura en Matemáticas en el Incarnate Word College en 1961 y comenzó su carrera como profesora de matemáticas y ciencias en la escuela secundaria.
Obtuvo su maestría y doctorado en Zoología en la Universidad de Texas (maestría en 1969; doctorado en 1976). Se especializó en investigación genética y fue profesora de Biología en la Universidad de Brown, el Incarnate Word College, la Universidad Northwestern, la Universidad Barry y la Universidad Loyola Marymount. Sor Catalina dedicó la última parte de su carrera al ministerio parroquial antes de regresar a San Antonio para servir como Tesorera de las Hermanas CCVI de 2008 a 2012.
