Title of artifacts [assigned by archives]: Peruvian Liturgical Objects
These liturgical objects were used in Chimbote, Peru in 1964 during the establishment of the first Peruvian mission of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word (CCVI). The grouping consists of a silver ciborium, a woven straw tabernacle, and a brass bell with a llama on its handle, all of which would be used in the celebration of the Mass. CCVI Archives does not have a record of the provenance of these objects outside of their Peruvian origins.
Five CCVI Sisters arrived in Chimbote, Peru on December 19, 1964, to establish their mission. Sister Charles Marie Frank, CCVI (1906-1998) recounted the first Mass after their arrival:
“The day after arrival in Chimbote, December 20, 1964, was “welcoming day” in the parish for the Sisters. The Sacrifice of the Mass was celebrated in an open depository containing building materials that the people could purchase from the government. It resembled a lumber yard. The parish did not have a church building. The Mass was well attended and was followed by a simple, tasty dinner in which cabrito (goat meat) was served. A reception was held for the Sisters. In the words of the pastor, Father Masciarelli, “I bless the day that it happened; the day they came we received them with open arms; the people literally received them with open arms". (“Chimbote: The Story of our First Peruvian Mission, 1964-1987,” Sister Charles Marie Frank, CCVI, 1987, pp. 27-28).
