Title of artifact [assigned by archives]: Reliquary, Saint Gemma Galgani
This brass reliquary contains a relic of Saint Gemma Galgani (1878-1903). Saint Gemma was an Italian mystic and stigmatist from Lucca. She was beatified in 1933 and canonized in 1940.
This reliquary likely dates to the time of Saint Gemma’s beatification in 1940. The vessel takes the form of a monstrance: a sunburst radiating outward from a central roundel and crowned with a cross finial atop a slender stand. The relic itself is encased in a nickel/aluminum-rimmed round window. It consists of a small silk flower, a reference to Saint’s Gemma’s common title of the “Passion flower,” with a relic at its center. The relic sits atop red fabric, surrounded by patterns of gold wire. A printed label underneath reads, “S. Gemmae G.”
This reliquary was originally displayed on the altar of the side chapel St. Anne in the Motherhouse Chapel of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas. This altar no longer exists, but it once stood where a fire escape door is today (to the right of the Eucharistic Adoration Chapel).
