Description

Title of artifact [assigned by archives]: Reliquary, Blessed Théophane Vénard and Laurent Imbert This ornate brass reliquary contains relics of the Blessed (now Saint) Jean-Théophane Vénard (1829-1861) and the Blessed (now Saint) Laurent-Joseph-Marius Imbert (1796-1839). Both men were priests of the Missions Étrangères de Paris (MEP), or Paris Foreign Missions Society, who were martyred in Asian mission fields. Théophane Vénard was beheaded in Tonkin, Vietnam in 1861, while Laurent Imbert was beheaded in Saenamteo, Korea in 1839. Vénard was beatified in 1909 and canonized in 1988; Imbert was beatified in 1925 and canonized in 1984. The reliquary dates to sometime after Imbert’s 1925 beatification. The vessel takes the form of a monstrance: a sunburst radiating outward from a central roundel and crowned with a cross finial atop a slender stand. Thin gold wire secures the relics, small fragments of bone, to decorative slips of paper atop red fabric in the central roundel. An upside-down blackletter label reads, “Ex Oss[ibus] B[eati] Th[eophani] Venard / Ex Oss[ibus] B. Laur. Imbert,” Latin for “From the bones of Blessed Théophane Vénard / From the bones of Blessed Laurent[-Joseph-Marius] Imbert.” This reliquary was originally displayed on the altar of the side chapel of St. Anne in the Motherhouse Chapel of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas. This altar no longer exists, but it once stood where a fire escape door is today (to the right of the Eucharistic Adoration Chapel).
