Description

Title of artifact [assigned by archives]: Reliquary, Mother Mary of the Cross This ornate brass standing cross contains a relic of Mother Mary of the Cross Rositter, CCVI (1861-1912). The relic is housed in a circular opening at the center of the cross, surrounded by paperole, or rolls of gold-trimmed ornamental paper. The cross is adorned at the ends with the fleur-de-lis and features neo-Gothic floral and vegetal decorations. Trefoils on each arm of the cross contain symbols for the four Evangelists: an angel for Matthew, a lion for Mark, an ox for Luke, and an eagle for John. St. John’s Orphanage was established in 1890 by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word (CCVI). Twenty-two years later, on the morning of October 30, 1912, a fire broke out, and in less than two hours, the building was destroyed. The lives of five Sisters and three children were lost. Mother Mary of the Cross, whose relic is contained in this cross, ran back into the fire to save a child but was overcome and perished in the fire. This reliquary was in the Spiritual Care Office at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital for over 30 years. Today, it is on display in the Heritage Center of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio.
