Description

Title of artifact [assigned by archives]: Reliquary, Pope St. Pius X This gilt silver reliquary contains a relic of Pope St. Pius X (1835-1914). The vessel takes the form of a monstrance: a sunburst radiating outward from a central roundel and crowned with a cross finial atop a slender stand. The relic itself sits under glass in the central roundel. It is a fabric fragment, likely a piece of a vestment or garment worn by Pope Pius X, which is a typical form for a papal relic. Atop the fabric is a printed label that reads, “S. PII X, O. P.” Pope Pius X holds particular significance to the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, as he ratified their Constitutions in 1910. Mother Alphonse Brollier, CCVI (1858-1939) and Sister Gabriel Wheelahan, CCVI (1859-1911) traveled to Rome for a private audience with the Pope, who issued them a decree of approbation on April 5, 1910. In her 1995 volume, “Promises to Keep,” Sister Margaret Patrice Slattery wrote, “The sisters had cause for celebration when the announcement [of the approbation] reached them in San Antonio. Sister Gabriel wrote to all of the mission houses, ‘Every mandate in these pages is now the express will of God for us, my dear sisters, bearing as it does the approbation of His Vicar, our beloved pontiff, Pius X’” (Promises to Keep, Vol. I, p.77). This reliquary was originally displayed on the altar of the side chapel St. Anne in the Motherhouse Chapel of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas. This altar no longer exists, but it once stood where a fire escape door is today (to the right of the Eucharistic Adoration Chapel).
