Title [assigned by archives]: Sister Olivia Prendergast, CCVI Artist Kirk Richards (born 1952) painted this portrait of Sister Olivia Prendergast, CCVI (1928 – 2003) in 1990, the year of Sister Olivia’s retirement from her role as Director of Hospice at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Amarillo, Texas. The waist-level portrait depicts Sister Olivia with a solemn expression, holding a red rose in her hands as she looks directly at the viewer. She wears a Celtic cross necklace to signify her Irish heritage. This portrait hung in the Hospice Den of St. Anthony’s Hospital and was donated to the CCVI Archives in 2016 following the closure of the Hospice center. This closure came after CHRISTUS Health sold its ownership stake in the Hospital to Ardent Health Services in 2013. Kirk Richards is an Amarillo-based realist artist and portraitist. He holds BFA and MA degrees in art from West Texas State University and studied under renowned portrait painter Richard F. Lack (1928 – 2009) from 1976-1980. Richards is one of only 24 artists to be nationally certified by the American Portrait Society and has painted many of Amarillo’s noted citizens. Sister Olivia Prendergast, CCVI was born in Athlone, County Westmeath, Ireland on August 21, 1928. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in 1949, took her first vows in 1952, and made her final profession in 1956. A certified midwife and registered nurse, Sister Olivia graduated from Incarnate Word College in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science degree. She later obtained her nursing degree from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. Sister Olivia served on staff at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital in San Antonio for 15 years, and concurrently as faculty at Incarnate Word College for 13 years before moving on to minister to the sick and infirm at Spohn Hospital in Corpus Christi, TX, St. Joseph's Hospital in Albuquerque, NM and Saint Anthony's Hospital in Amarillo, TX. Sister Olivia is recognized as the woman who "founded Hospice in the Texas Panhandle". She founded the St. Anthony's Hospice program in October 1980 and served as its director until 1990. In “The Spectrum” hospital newsletter, Sister Olivia spoke about her call to Hospice and how it had changed her: "I have changed tremendously. I'm not simply a Catholic nun anymore. I have grown in the 'universalness' of spirituality, become more economical. In sharing pastoral challenges, I have grown in the deep appreciation of the common concerns and common journey to God." In 2002, Sister Olivia published a book on her experiences, entitled, “Olivia: ‘She Was Hospice.’” Sister Olivia passed away on March 18, 2003.
