Description

Title of artwork [assigned by archives]: St. Anthony of Padua This carved wooden statue of St. Anthony of Padua came from the St. Anthony’s Hospital (now Baptist St. Anthony’s) in Amarillo, Texas. St. Anthony is depicted standing as he holds the infant Jesus in his arms. This is typical in depictions of the saint, who received a mystical vision of being embraced by Jesus, who appeared as a “loving child.”. The Archives do not have information on the artist or date of this statue. The Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word (CCVI) founded St. Anthony’s Sanitarium in 1901. It was the first Catholic hospital in the Texas panhandle. In 1996, St. Anthony’s and High Plains Baptist Hospital merged into Baptist St. Anthony’s Health System. CHRISTUS Health sold its share of the hospital to Ardent Health Services in 2012, and this statue was donated to the CCVI Archives shortly thereafter in 2014. St. Anthony is the patron saint of the city of San Antonio. St. Anthony was a Franciscan friar and priest, known for his gift of preaching. He also was known as a man of prayer, and a scholar of scripture. He was the first Franciscan friar to teach theology to other friars. His last mission was in Padua, Italy, where he died on June 13, 1231. He was named a Doctor of the Church in 1946.
