Description

Title [assigned by artist]: Road to Emmaus III This 2015 large-scale oil painting depicts the Scriptural account of Jesus accompanying two disciples on the road to Emmaus. The artist, Daniel Bonnell, rendered a sprawling sunset in vibrant shades of yellow, orange, blue, and pink. Jesus and the two disciples appear as small shadowy figures in the far right of the composition, surrounded by a yellow strip of sky. Jesus stands in the middle of the group with a subtle halo. In a CCVI Chapel blog post from April 17, 2020, Sister Mary Cecilia Henry, CCVI wrote, “Jesus appeared to ‘two disciples’ who were on their way to Emmaus from Jerusalem when they encountered the risen Christ. He began to walk with them, but ‘their eyes were prevented from recognizing him’ (Luke 24). After, he interpreted for them all that referred to him ‘in all the Scriptures.’ As they approached the village, they asked him to stay with them, and while he was at table with them, he ‘took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them.’ Later, the two recounted to the other disciples what had taken place, and how ‘he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.’" CHRISTUS Health gifted this painting to the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word (CCVI) in 2015. They gave a similar painting to the CCVI Sisters of Houston. CHRISTUS Health relocated their headquarters to Irving, Texas in June 2013, and filled their offices with artwork by Bonnell. Gerry Heeley, senior vice president of mission integration and leadership formation, said in a 2013 Catholic Health Association article, "We utilized the sacred art of Daniel Bonnell to visually communicate the Scriptural healing stories in each of the reflection rooms as well as other places throughout the building. We made the most of every opportunity to surround our associates and guests with symbols and artistic reminders of the heritage, spirituality and core values of CHRISTUS Health." Today, this painting hangs in the reception area of the business offices of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas.

Artist, author, and teacher, Daniel Bonnell is a fine arts graduate of the Atlanta College of Art, and received his Master of Fine Art from the Savannah College of Art and Design. His post graduate studies were under the photographer Ansel Adams, designer Milton Glaser, and illustrator James McMullan. Daniel’s paintings are found in galleries, places of worship, and galleries in 100 countries around the world. His art has shown in Saint George’s Cathedral, Saint Paul’s Cathedral in London, The National Cathedral in Washington D.C., and the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York City. His paintings are found in Catholic and Protestant churches, convents, and cathedrals throughout Israel, England, and America. Daniel describes his painting in spiritual dimensions: “Each painting, for me, became like a devotion. I would take a bit of Scripture that spoke to me and meditate on it for weeks or even months. And then I would just start painting. If you really study the parables, you’ll find there are anywhere from four to ten dimensions to the story.” In general, Daniel prefers not to reveal too much about his work, hoping instead people will approach the paintings with a humility that will allow them to see what he thinks God wants to unveil through the art. Y luego simplemente empezaba a pintar.
