This complex piece is based on a pattern carved into a wooden
door in a 13th-century mosque. I like to explore the concept of positive and
negative spaces and of taking something solid and making it supple.
Starting with loose wool fibers, I have developed and refined a technique I call
‘Felt Silhouette,’ which is a painstaking process that allows me to predictably
create graphically precise forms in a classically unpredictable art form. There is
no glue or sewing involved in this piece; the loose wool fibers have been hand
felted through the weave of a linen burlap fabric, and I have removed half of the
warp threads to create a semi-transparent screen and aid the wool fibers’ ability
to felt through the linen permanently.Note Type

The panel has grommets at the top edge and two felted ropes that
suspend the bottom roll to accommodate low or high ceilings in a space.
