JA Retrospective - The Steamplant, Olympia, WANote
My father grew up during the Depression. Nothing was wasted or thrown away
because everything was seen as a resource and saved for potential use. He
was a cartographer and an optimist. Thanks to him, I learned to read, draw, and
respect maps, and I grew up seeing the potential in even the smallest piece of
string or scrap of fabric.
When I found this rescued jute in his basement after his death at 96, it spoke to
me, asking to be made into art in his honor. Each knot represents a hurdle or
challenge we faced and overcame as a family, and by felting the jute into wool,
it speaks to how we created experiences of beauty and wonder from those
circumstances.Note Type
