Rana is a graduate from the NCA in Lahore and also from the Massachusetts College of Fine Arts in Boston. In his photography, sculpture and digital printmaking, Rana transposes imagery from one time and place to another, through manipulation, repetition and rearrangement. In his photomontages, he reconfigures tiny mosaic like images into micro-mosaics using a computer software program. He has not abandoned traditional miniature art completely – the traditional grid is very apparent in his work. On close examination, the viewer discovers thousands of micro images of birdcages that are usually placed on rooftops in Lahore.
