Mughal miniatures were a blend of the vivid colors favored by Indian painters and the delicate lines preferred by Persian painters. The early works were small, some only a few inches in size, highly detailed and boldly colored. Later, the works were of a larger scale, the colors were subdued and harmonious and the surrounding borders were magnificently decorative. Jesuit missionaries visiting the Mughal courts presented engravings and illuminated manuscripts by European artists to the Mughal Emperors, who encouraged their artists to copy the works.
