The British East India Company and other foreign companies arrived in India in the 18th and 19th  centuries and Indian artists adopted an Indo-European style of painting to appeal to these new patrons. The paintings were large scale images of Indian people, landscapes, flora and fauna. However, the school lost its momentum with the introduction of photography to India in the early 1840s.
