A decade after he received generous acclaim for his black ink paintings featuring the heart- wrenching suffering of the 1943 Bengal famine, Abedin turned to happier themes in watercolor capturing typical Bengali landscapes including fishing scenes and village life. By the late 1960s, with the advent of modernism spreading across South Asia, Abedin returned to his ink loaded brush to paint stylized faces like this painting from the Hundal collection.
