Bangladeshi painters like Zainul Abedin preferred watercolor to record their idyllic surroundings of sea and bucolic landscapes. Though trained in the Western tradition, watercolor was acceptable since that medium was associated with pre-colonial art. By the 1960s, however, his countrymen traded tradition for abstract oils on canvas.
