A 1960 graduate of the National College of Arts, Arshad abandoned his semiabstract paintings of Punjabi village life to take up abstract calligraphy. The Hundal painting channels his Manuscript series, unreadable calligraphic compositions that look like antique pages from an Islamic book. Monochromatic to add authenticity and aesthetic nuance, the hand print at the bottom is a reminder that this type of work is hand made.
