Not satisfied with his position as design engineer in Stockholm, after earning an M A in hydraulics from Columbia University and another in soil mechanics from Harvard, Gulgee returned to Pakistan to begin a career in art. Lauded for his immaculate draftsmanship he gained fame as a painter of portraits and horses. His realistic figurative lapis mosaics are unmatched to this day. In 1960, witnessing an exhibition of Abstract Expressionist paintings, he started adapting abstracted calligraphy to Action Painting technique and produced paintings like this one in the Hundal Collection.
