Kulkarni was greatly influenced by the mural paintings at Ajanta Caves and other historic Indian sources such as temple sculpture at Khajuraho and bronzes from the Chola dynasty. His empathy with his native sources and a pivotal trip to Mexico, Guatamala, Peru and Brazil, where he was enchanted by Maya and Inca art, subsequently underscored by modernism, molded his mature art. This painting in the Hundal Collection represents the essence of that configuration.
