Mohammad Kibria’s diverse background informed his artistic development. He graduated from the Government School of Art in Calcutta in 1950, became lecturer at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Dhaka in 1954, then left to study at Tokyo University of the Arts from 1959-1962. This untitled work in the Hundal collection, exemplary of his mature style, reflects his Japanese experience. Subtly blended colors and the essence of mist and atmosphere recall Japanese wash paintings, while at the same time the highly textured surface and nonfigurative approach speaks to his interaction with other contemporary abstractionists when he was abroad and back in Dhaka.
