Pakistani artist who whilst working in remote areas of Northern Pakistan, where absence of conventional artistic media forced him to experiment with substitutes for paints and surfaces, precipitating the development of his characteristic technique of engraving.
Originally a children’s book illustrator, the artist has created a series of penknife-engraved drawings, using toys to reflect the innocence of childhood and the intuitive need for security. He has used figures associated with international pop culture that have become central figures in children’s lives through non-stop merchandizing by large multinational corporations. In his scary “wounded” and bandaged toys he juxtaposes innocence and violence, a reference to the current disintegration of society’s moral and ethical values.
