A reinterpretation of a 17th century Mughal miniature painting by contemporary miniaturist, Farhat Ali.
A nobleman and his consort are seated on a fabulous composite horse. Composite animals were common in Mughal miniature art. In replacing the kaleidoscope of animals in the horse of the original work with characters from contemporary animated Hollywood films, Ali is commenting on the similarities between traditional miniature art and Disney cartoons. Disney Studios and the imperial atelier, both had wealthy, influential patrons. The flat, stylized miniature paintings are not unlike the flat, two dimensional, exaggerated images of Disney characters. Both also make use of symbolism and the element of storytelling to convey a deeper message.
