Sohail’s enigmatic narratives and his unusual technique stand out among mid and late 20th century Pakistani artists. Domiciled in England since his teens in the early 60s, his work is a fusion of East and West. With imagery that he says wells up from the depths of his subconscious and occasional conscious mind, he brushes, dapples and scrapes the surface producing paintings that are all at once, miniaturist, primitivist, sardonic yet humorous, sensitive and severe. His frequent inclusion of nudes prevented easy exhibition in Pakistan until the proliferation of private galleries with admission by invitation only.
