Photograph of the back half of the "First Inhabitants" float during the celebration of South River's 200th anniversary, September 1920. Two houses and several members of a band are visible in the background.
The float is described in a September 25, 1920 article in the Daily Home News. "The Landing of Samuel Willett, the founder of South River, in 1720, was cleverly impersonated by Masters Raymond Dudley Booraem and Warren Klauser Booraem sons of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Booraem. The little ones are direct descendants. The impersonation was arranged on a float. One of the boys was seated in a large canoe and was looking longingly toward the most beautiful spot along the river which later was settled as Willetstown and now is the enterprising borough of South River which has been appropriately nicknamed "The Booming Borough." At the rear of the float lay an Indian, representing the inhabitants of this section when the Willetts first landed." It won first prize for the best float.
