Newspaper page featuring images related to the history of the bridge over the South River between South River and Sayreville. The images are captioned as follows: --Sailboats docked at the foot of Jackson Street, and joined fishermen for refreshments at Klauser's Tavern. --Predecessor - This photograph from about 1900 shows the fixed bridge across the South River until the Causeway drawbridge was built in about 1910. The drawbridge, in turn, will be demolished when the new county bridge opens. --Dead End - The Causeway bridge was knocked out of commission several times in the 1960's, when barges bumped into the bridge gears. At right, cranes make repairs, while at lower left motorists are told to halt. Upper left, Road Superintendent Joseph Kunie posts the detour (to Old Bridge) sign. --Route of new bridge, in the planning stages for more than five years. --Floods have been a common sight in downtown South River for years. --Pilings are stacked up along the Causeway, to be used as underpinnings for the new bridge to Sayreville. --Bulldozer plows through the meadowlands bordering the South River, creating a path for new road and bridge linking Main street to Washington road in Sayreville. Construction began in earnest this week. Part of the February 7, 1973 "Annual Progress Edition" of an unidentified newspaper. Includes two folded sheets [4 pages each] and one single sheets [2 pages]. Only pages 13 and 18 are numbered. The publication is devoted to progress in towns in Middlesex County. Page [14] features a photograph about Laffin Chevrolet while page 18 features bridge history. The remainder of the articles focus on other towns in Middlesex County along with advertisements for area businesses.
