Description

Black and white photograph of a house on Jackson Street with trees and telephone poles visible across the front and American flags and bunting decorating the visible side of the house. A sign under the eaves reads, "Direct Descendant of Samuel Willett." Photograph likely dates to 1920 and the celebration of South River's 200th anniversary. Handwritten text under the photograph reads: " 'The Old Castle ^ - Oldest house in S.R. - razed c 1967; Brown (Martin) Homestead - Jackson Street" in faded black ink. Stamped text in black ink on the back of the cardboard reads: "Woodis M. Booraem, 208 Main Street, South River, New Jersey 08882." Photograph fixed to a roughly cut cardboard backing that measures 3 1/4" X 7 3/4" at its widest point. Photograph is in good condition with a crease on the front top left corner, some staining along the left edge and a tear going approximately one inch into the image from the right edge.

The house was home to members of the Martin and Brown families, related to the Willetts, and was known as the Kline or Klein building when it was demolished in 1965 to make way for the Pulawski Savings and Loan building (now Provident Bank, 2024).
