2021.011.054Description
Captain's badge from the South River Police Department. "South River, N.J." is in a ribbon-shaped banner across the top with the word "Police" below. "Captain" appears in a bar across the bottom. The center design is based on the official New Jersey seal. The outer edge is topped by a sun ray pattern, and the lower by a laurel leaf design.
The seal in the center includes four of the five symbols in the state seal.
The helmet and the horse's head crest represent New Jersey's independence as a state and status as one of the first states.
The woman at the left holding a staff with a liberty cap on top is Liberty, who represents freedom.
The woman on the right is the Roman goddess of grain, Ceres, representing the fruits and vegetables grown in New Jersey.
The three plows on the shield symbolize the agricultural tradition of New Jersey.
The state's motto "Liberty and Prosperity" normally appears on a scroll at the bottom of the seal, but has been replaced with a plain bar.
Gold tone with blue lettering, ribbon highlights, and background for the symbols in the center design. Measures 2" x 2 3/4" and has a pin back with some discoloration. Good condition.Acquisition
