Black and white photograph of the Capitol Theatre on Main Street around the time that it closed. A movie poster to the left of the doors advertises Joan Crawford in "Berserk," the last movie played at the theater before it closed on January 27, 1968. The poster on the right advertises a matinee of "Dog of Flanders."
The door to the right of the "Dog of Flanders" poster is the entrance for a group of businesses on the second floor of the building: International Music & Dance Studios, Capitol Beauty Salon, Dr. W.A. Smith Dentist, and the South River Loan Company. Further to the right is the A & P Shoe Service.
Photograph originally appeared in the Daily Home News on January 27, 1968 with the caption: "South River's only theater goes out of existence after tonight's movies. The Capitol, which dates back 40 years, will become a dress manufacturing plant." The photograph also appeared with a March 5, 1979 article in the Home News with the caption: "Last Picture Show - The curtain closed for the last time in the Capitol Theater on Jan. 27, 1968. The demise of the Capitol brought an end to 40 years of movies in South River."
The back of the photograph has a variety of notations related to its use in the newspaper along with a handwritten note in red ink that reads, "South River Theatres - Capitol."
