Notes

Philip C. Wakeley of the Southern Forest Experiment Station of the U.S. Forest Service led the research effort to develop reforestation procedures. In 1934, Wakeley moved his research program to the Kisatchie National Forest’s Stuart Nursery to take advantage of CCC resources. CCC camps provided manpower for the managing the nursery and out planting pine seedlings in research studies. The CCC crews planted nearly 700,000 seedlings in research studies on the Palustris Experimental Forest. This effort became the basis of Wakeley’s “Planting the Southern Pines” book that provided the guidelines for reforestation across the South.
