On July 5, 1935, Company 3498, Camp Army-1, was established 12 miles east of Shreveport, on the 22,000-acre Barksdale Airport Reservation, said to be the world’s largest military reservation. The first group of enrollees consisted of 80 African-Americans from the Shreveport area. Another 90 African-American enrollees came from New Orleans.
