In his early career, Stanley Lea exhibited in the Midwest. He moved to Texas to teach at Sam Houston State University, where he began the art department’s printmaking program and pioneered a new method called viscosity printing, which employed ink viscosity process techniques in relief, lithograph, and intaglio printing. He printed the colors simultaneously instead of separately. Due to the complexity of the process, he printed only around fifteen of each edition. This print is a great example of Lea’s works. He was also very fond of collagraphs, where the printing plate is created by affixing different materials and shapes to a rigid base. This is a collagraph print of his that reflects the timeless “landscapes” for which he is well known.
