In 1952, Will Petersen was drafted by the US Army and sent to Korea, and then to Hokkaido, Japan. There, he learned the art of calligraphy under Master Tahaa and fell in love with ancient Noh plays. Petersen taught English at Japanese colleges and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. He then moved back to the United States with his family to teach drawing at Ohio State University. Petersen taught at Wester Virginia University as the head of the printmaking department. While this print does not have the written characters associated with traditional calligraphy, the attention to detail Petersen used with calligraphy is apparent in his printmaking. The composition is very intentional and the lines of various hues and thicknesses are strong.
