An American artist and sculptor, William Haendel graduated from the University Of Wisconsin at Madison. He then pursued advanced study in Seattle and London. He received a Fulbright Award in 1960 to study silversmithing and sculpture in England. He had exhibitions in Canada, Sweden, Italy, and England as well as several in the United States. Haendel’s work conveys narratives and commentaries on many aspects of contemporary life, and he is known for working with cast paper. While printmaking was not Haendel’s main medium, you can see the overflow of his style. Most of his sculptures portray war or men with guns. This print appears to follow this theme, depicting three soldiers. However, look again, and we see they are toy soldiers standing amidst and upon alphabet blocks.
