William Weege was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1935. He attended the University of Wisconsin to study engineering. Weege later got into printmaking and returned to UW to formally study this medium. In 1970, he represented the US at the Venice Biennale, even leading a printing workshop there. During the Vietnam War, Weege openly expressed political themes through his art. However, after this period, his art style shifted to abstract works. This is a colorful print of a lady posing or dancing. Therefore, it is easy to see that this print was before his shift to abstraction. This piece doesn’t scream political but does have political undertones to it, particularly since it was made during the extravagant celebrations surrounding America’s Bicentennial.
