Richard Aberle Florsheim was an American printmaker from Chicago. He studied art in New York with the Trompe l’œil artist Aaron Bohrod, and then at the University of Chicago before traveling abroad for further training in France and Italy. He returned to Chicago in 1939 and worked as a Navy cartographer during World War II. During this time, he developed a plane radar spotting technique . Following the war, Florsheim worked as an artist producing and exhibiting prints, while also teaching art in New York and Milwaukee. He also co-founded the Artist’s League of the Midwest with the Artists' Equity Association. His lithographs are characterized by vibrant, saturated colors and abstract depictions of landscapes, emphasizing patterns, shapes, and hues.

This black and white composition utilizes texture and technique to create a dynamic lithographic print. A lone figure standing in the moonlight faces an expansive landscape with mountains in the background. The sky, with its dramatic atmospheric effects, makes up the majority of the composition. Florsheim created the contrasting textures of the linear earth and the swirling heavens by using two different lithographic print techniques.
