Richard Aberle Florsheim was an American printmaker from Chicago. He studied art in New York with the Trompe l’œil artist Aaron Bohrod, and then at the University of Chicago before traveling abroad for further training in France and Italy. He returned to Chicago in 1939 and worked as a Navy cartographer during World War II. During this time, he developed a plane radar spotting technique . Following the war, Florsheim worked as an artist producing and exhibiting prints, while also teaching art in New York and Milwaukee. He also co-founded the Artist’s League of the Midwest with the Artists' Equity Association. His lithographs are characterized by vibrant, saturated colors and abstract depictions of landscapes, emphasizing patterns, shapes, and hues.

This print exemplifies Florsheim’s characteristic use of vibrant, saturated colors. This waterscape depicts anchored ships along a horizon line, where a painterly sea meets a mottled sky. The use of color creates an otherworldly interpretation of nature, with a dominating palette of acid yellow and green. Florsheim’s use of tousche ink to achieve the dramatic marbling effect for the sky is a recurring motif in his lithographs.
