LaVonna Nelson and Grandma (Elise) Rupp, ca 1935
It wasn’t long after he heard of arrival that Jacob Rupp met Elise. Courtship followed and they were married October 22, 1892. His two room cabin was their first home; rooms were added as the children came along – Walter, Rose, Elizabeth, Amelia, Nelle, Freda, Florence, George, and William. A new house was finished in 1909 with the aid of a Swiss carpenter named Adolph. With their nine children, Jacob and Elise moved into this spacious home of two stories and large attic room, which they called the “third story.” Alice was born after the move, the only child who couldn’t claim she was born in a log cabin. The house is still in use, although as a result of a recent fire, some remodeling of the upper part has been done.Collection
