Description

Cabinet card photograph of an unidentified young woman taken by Cheney photographer J.E. Thomas circa 1890. This photograph was found in Lucy A. Robbins Switzer's album. The first photographer who opened a studio in Cheney was a fellow named F.J. Eastman who had a photo parlor on First Street in 1883. 017/2010.50.145 In 1886 after Mr. Eastman's departure, JE Thomas opened a photo parlor in upstairs rooms over the Chicago Grocery. His business was destroyed during the fire of February 23, 1890. The fire started in O'Donnell's hardware store and destroyed 10 businesses in the downtown district. This came less than a year after the horrific fire in April 1889 that destroyed 40 businesses and homes. Mr. Thomas reopened his business, working in Cheney out of a portable studio, but left in 1891. Advertising card 015/2009.1.1 018/2011.4.1; 019/2011.65.2; 014/2008.40.5; 014/2008.40.7; 011/2568-FIC;
