This historical battle took place in Reno, Nevada on July 4, 1910 and has become known as the “Fight Of The Century.” During an age where racial tensions were still high in the United States, many people were not happy that the Heavyweight Title belonged to an African-American fighter. James J. Jeffries, hailed as “The Great White Hope” by the media, tried to make a comeback after two years of retirement to recapture the crown. However, Johnson defeated Jeffries in the 15th round, a result that ended in race riots breaking out in many parts of the country.
