Photograph of Cline Building, Springfield, Oregon, circa 1911-1946Entry/Object ID
1989.001.505Description
Photograph of two story brick building with numerous business signs in the windows. Signs include E W McWilliams, dentist; Chamber of Commerce; Lady Fair Shoppe; a lawyer and bank.
On label is written: "No other building in Springfield has been more closely associated with banking than the present Cline building on the S.E. corner of Fourth and Main Streets. It has contained within its walls three banks. The first of these was the "Commercial State Bank" in 1911 to be followed by the "Bank of Oregon" in 1940. In 1946 the latter was sold to the Portland "United States National Bank" and it became a branch of that institution. After "The Commercial Bank" had been in business for about 20 years (six years after the death of the well liked vice-president O.B. Kessey) it was closed and declared insolvent. The year following "The First National Bank" also closed. The great Depression was under way and Springfield was without banking facilities for eight years. It was in 1940 that "The Bank of Oregon" was organized with H.L. Edmunds as president"Photograph Details
