Photograph of Indigenous woman in front of house, circa 1930-1940.
Written on back of photograph: "Maggie Jack, Indian, Warm Springs, 1930-1940"
According to 1940 Census (see attached image), Maggie “So Go Ni Mu” Jack was born in Oregon in 1873 and in 1940 was living on or near the Burns Paiute Reservation with her husband, Willie Jack, who was born in 1874 in Oregon and was likely part of the Burns Paiute Tribe.
According to Find a Grave (image attached), "While her headstone says she was age 83 when she died, the U.S. Indian Census records show she was born in 1873. Maggie was married 3 known times: between 1913-1919 she married Big Foot Frank - no known children. Before 1923 she married William Phoenix - no known children. On Sept 13, 1927 in Harney County she married Willie Jack". In his death notice in 1954, Willie is listed as "last of the medicine men of the Paiute Indian Tribe at Burns".
Maggie died in 1972 and is buried in the Burns Paiute Cemetery.Photograph Details
