1989.001.201Description
Tug of war at railroad bridge, crowd, carnival tents, and oil storage tanks in sight circa 1910
Transcribed inscription on reverse:
Written on the back in black ink: "'Tug of war' at Springfield 1910. X marks our house."
Typed and attached to the back: "Tug of war in Springfield in 1910. We are looking north at the back of the buildings located on what is now 'South A Street.' At left is the railroad track that crosses Main Street at 3rd. Springfield railroad depot can be seen at extreme right in picture. Mark's trading post (the old Booth Kelly mill) would be to the right of picture but not shown. Please note the huge oil tank in center of picture. The year after this photograph was made-- 1911-- the Booth Kelly mill burned, and the citizens of Springfield stayed up all night fighting the fire to keep it from reaching this tank. We knew that if the fire ever reached the oil tank our city was doomed. There is a carnival in town on South 4th Street and some of the tents and merry-go-rounds can be plainly seen at right and back of oil storage tank."Photograph Details
