Inscription back: The Spanish explorer, Heceta, came by this section of the Oregon coast two centuries ago, noting this point of land jutting into the sea. When Oregon was settled his early visit was recalled by the pioneers who later honered his memory by naming the point Heceta Head where a lighthouse was constructed to guide the mariners who followed the Spaniard so many years later.
