White envelope with printed handwriting in pencil. Four stamps appear at the right side. The two stamps to the left, one dark green 5-cent stamp and one lime green 16-cent stamp are both from the third issue. The two stamps directly to the right, are an orange 8-cent stamp and a blue 50-cent stamp. All four stamps depict Dr. Sun Yat-sen. A purple cancellation in Mandarin (Chinese) present overtop.

Partial excerpt taken from exhibit page Gary Sternberg in Shanghai: Mixing Flour, Water, and German Opera: Gary (Gerd) Sternberg was born in Germany on August 25, 1931 to a Protestant mother and a Jewish father. Although he and his sister were raised and baptized as Protestants, Nazi ideology designated Gary as Jewish. Gary’s father was arrested and sent to Sachsenhausen concentration camp on June 14, 1938. When released January 28, 1939, the family managed to find refuge in Shanghai, China with about 18,000 other mostly-Jewish refugees. Gary’s family lived in Shanghai from May 1939 to July 1948. Herman Sternberg, Gary's father, addressed the envelope and contents to Gary while residing in Shanghai, China. The stamps appearing on the front side of the envelope depict Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, a Chinese revolutionary who founded the Republic of China. Born in 1866, Sun Yat-sen is widely regarded as the “pioneer of the revolution" according to Marie-Claire Bergère, author of Sun Yat-sen.
