Friedrich Hoyer was an early inmate of Dachau. He entered the camp along with other active Socialists and Communists of Augsburg on June 8, 1933. I have translated parts of the newspaper clipping pertaining to the entry of the men into Dachau. I have found the police report on that specifies why each man was sent to Dachau. Given that some of the text of the newspaper article is the same as what appears in the police report, the reporter clearly had access to the report. I created a German transcription and English translation of the complete police report and have researched important terms included in the report, so readers understand the Socialist and Communist organizations. The Foundation possesses a 50th birthday postcard that Friedrich Hoyer sent to his wife from the camp. I have tracked down information about Hoyer’s wife and son. From the information about his wife—she was born in August 1883) I can provide a good estimate of the date when Hoyer sent the post card. The completed deliverable, titled, “A Red Rose for Eva: The Nazi Crackdown on Augsburg’s Socialists and Communists,” provides an important window into the early history of Dachau and the persecution of Socialists and Communists during the first months of the Nazi regime.Collection
